Take action to close the gap in girls' and women's bleeding and clotting care
The consequences of unrecognized or undertreated bleeding and clotting disorders in women are serious and, in many cases, preventable.
Venous thromboembolism remains a leading cause of maternal mortality worldwide, while bleeding disorders such as von Willebrand disease, hemophilia and rare factor deficiencies are significantly underdiagnosed in women, despite causing heavy menstrual bleeding, prolonged postpartum hemorrhage and a measurably lower quality of life.
When patients understand their risk, when clinicians have access to current evidence, when researchers can collaborate across borders and when policymakers prioritize these conditions in health systems, outcomes improve.

1 in 4 people worldwide will develop a blood clot in their lifetime, with risk increasing during pregnancy, postpartum and with hormonal therapies.
(WTD Campaign)
Postpartum hemorrhage accounts for approximately 25% of maternal deaths worldwide, making it one of the leading causes of preventable maternal mortality.
(WHO, UNICEF)
Heavy menstrual bleeding affects up to 30% of women globally, yet it is frequently underreported and undertreated.

Women's health presents one of the most urgent and actionable opportunities for global policy impact," said Donna DiMichele, N.D. "By prioritizing maternal and reproductive health, we are aligning the ISTH's scientific excellence with recognized global health priorities and ensuring that women's bleeding and clotting disorders receive the attention, research investment and care that they deserve.
